I have recently lost my Portuguese Water Dog pup “One-One” to a paralysis tick. Both it and my other dog Chloe were supposedly ‘protected’ (on reading the packet again it says “control”) by Frontline Plus. Luckily I found a tick that was also on Chloe a few weeks earlier and removed it early enough and she did not suffer any adverse effects. One thing that is causing me dismay is that the vet asked me if I washed the dog frequently, to which the answer was no. Another problem I have is that when you go to this vet’s premises (and others I have visited) you find large displays of these products that claim to be “water fast”. That indicates to me there may be some conflict.
I search my dogs for ticks regularly however One-One being so hairy and not yet having had his first clip made the tick hard to find. Even the vet had trouble finding it and said she would have to clip the dog to do so. In the end she fond it without the clip being done.
So I ask again, on behalf of all the other little One-Ones out there does Frontline Plus really work? (One-One is an Anglicized version of the Japanese “Won Won” which is ‘woof woof’ or puppy.)
Any comment on your experience with the Frontline Plus product would be appreciated.

“Yes, my preventative of choice is K9Advantix. I was using Frontline Plus but changed after talking to some knowledgeable people.
I learned that while Frontline Plus goes into the bloodstream, Advantix does not. Good feature!
Advantix repels and kills ticks before they can attach, while Frontline Plus does not. Therefore Advantix stops the risk of the dog picking up any tick diseases such as Lyme disease. Advantix stops biting fleas within 3-5 minutes and kills them before they can lay eggs. Acts on flea larvae.
Advantix kills mosquitoes before they can bite. Frontline Plus does not act on mosquitoes.”
So what to do now? Change to Advantix I guess. Ric

My dog is in hospital at the vets tonight. he is a 6mth old pup.
He has been treated with frontline plus every 2weeks for the past 6weeks.
Yet he is in hospital being treated for tick paralysis.
Everyone including vets have told me to apply frontline plus every 2 weeks to PREVENT tick paralysis.
Frontline onviously DOES NOT WORK !!!!!

I am very sorry to hear your dog is in hospital, I hope all goes well. I have tried to get some sort of definitive statement from a few vets on the value of Frontline Plus as protection against paralysis ticks but to no avail. One pet shop owner suggested I contact the company however I don’t think they would be very receptive. I am still sad over the loss of my pup and find (as I perceive it) the attitude of silence, averted yes and shuffling when I ask them why they have shelves full of it very disturbing and annoying to put it mildly. Again I really hope your puppy pulls through. Please let me know. If you have any other friends/owners using the product they would be welcome to put their thoughts and opinons here. Ric
